HolyDays Summer Day Camp last week

Well 4 weeks have passed - and we are on our last days of Summer Day Camp.  I can't help but boast of the good work that has been done by our Director, Co-Ordinator, Counselors and all the Counselors in training.  Today was a particularly good example of how they were all able to roll with the punches - so to speak.  Thursday is outing day at camp.  We were supposed to go to Albion Hills conservation Park and swim and play games on their new splash pad / pool.  The weather meant there had to be a change - so we booked a movie - a private group screening - in Richmond Hill. The bus company some how messed up their booking and had our buses scheduled for Friday!  (This was the 4th Thursday outing in a row - where did they get Friday from?!) When you are supposed to board the bus at 9:15 and they don't get to the School until 10 am - you need to occupy the Campers - and think on your feet.  Well it was clear that the experiences that our Counselors have had in other settings - and the quick thinking of Stephanie - meant that they came up a few games to keep everyone occupied.  And the theatre was also flexible - and a good time was had by all!
Here is part of an email I received yesterday:
My daughter ... has been attending the HolyDays summer camp and I wanted to let you know that we are so very impressed with the camp.  My daughter has been having such a wonderful time making friends and participating in all the fun activities Stephanie and Erin have planned. The camp idea was such a great one ... I love the crafts and stories my daughter has brought home each day. She so much enjoyed making cookies with yourself and making a rosary with Fr. Sherwin. I am so very touched that you both were involved with the camp activities and I know my daughter is super excitied to see you both ... now she also has these wonderful memories of getting to know you both on a different level. Thank you for that.I wanted to commend Stephanie and Erin for their INCREDIBLE work. These two ladies are fantastic and a pleasure to see each day. You can tell they have put their hearts into every decision. Their beautiful smiles light up the room. May God Bless you all and I hope that you continue this camp for years to come.
Its letters like this that remind us of how much the work is worth the effort!

Refugee Family Update - July 21, 2011

Here is a bit of a thumbnail update on our Refugee Family - the Eisho's (most of it courtesy of our Justice Committee chairman - Carmel Hili):
The family were brought back to COSTI on Monday July 11 and then and Anne (Parsons) and Carmel were to meet them and the Government RAP official on Wednesday. Due to a change in the time of the meeting Anne went by herself.  The First home we thought we had secured slipped out of our hands
The government official gave Evelyn and Madeleine their cheques for start up costs, rent and utilities, their monthly expenditures and loans. They opened a bank account and COSTI staff helped them with getting IFH, OHIP, SIN, etc. In the evening the family and some of the committee met at one home - 3 bedrooms, big backyard, a deck, 2 bathrooms, nice house. The problem was that the new owner is asking for a 2 year lease. This contact came from Cheryll Robb of Royal LePage whom we had contacted to assist us in finding a home for the family.

They spent the next few days at Anne and Gary's (enjoying their pool!) Anne and Marion took them out on Thursday and in the evening Carmel connected with them to look at a 3 bedroom townhouse. The house is in relatively good shape but needs a new paint job and bit of a clean-up. This house was also referred to us by Cheryll Robb.

Friday, Marion and Anne took them to the TD bank and Giant Tiger and then we met at Tim Horton's for a lunch. In the afternoon, Anne and Marion took the children around while Carmel accompanied Madeleine and Evelyn to Caledon Community Services (CCS). They registered for English ESL classes starting on August 20. In emergencies, they were told they can get a monthly voucher for $70 as well as a food hamper. While there, they filled two large garbage bags with new clothes from a shipment CCS had received from a local brand name warehouse. The children can also participate in the summer kids' program once the Holy Family day camp is over.  An employment centre staff gave them an overview of the program and took us for a tour of the offices.

In the evening on Friday, Marion invited all of us plus Marlene for dinner at her place. It was a very nice evening and I thought the family enjoyed the food, the relaxed atmosphere and the hospitality of Marion and her husband Brian. On Saturday, Gary and Anne drove them to Sami and Eileen where they are spending the next few days.

On Monday, Anne, who had prepared the offer, and Carmel went to the realtor's office to finalize the papers. They faxed the papers to a real estate office in Hamilton close to the house of the sister Aileen,  and Evelyn and Madeleine went over there and signed them. Anne and Carmel prepared a joint letter from both HF and Bolton United Church to strengthen the application and to companion the documents.

I heard late this afternoon that the Landlord has agreed to the lease and it will be for at least 1 year. We will find out all the particulars tomorrow!

I am so grateful to both Carmel and Anne for all the work that they have done in the past few weeks.   It really has been quite a learning curve - even though Carmel has had experience with refugee sponsorship in the past!

Peace

Home again!

I arrived home from holidays Wednesday night ... but my bags did not!  With a connection in Montreal, I made it onto an earlier flight - jammed full - but my bags missed the plane.  Air Canada's tracer system says the bag will be delivered this morning...
Today after some time in the office, clearing the mail, and celebrating Mass, I hope to head down to the Blue Jays game with our young people attending Holydays Summer Day Camp. Also hoping to welcome Sant and Mirna - 2 of the children from our refugee family who will go to the game with us and also join us at camp these days...
I will give a full update on the Refugee family later today or tomorrow...

Each priest within the Archdiocese of Toronto is entited to 4 weeks of holidays. This will be my second official week of holidays - Monday I head off for 8 days - 9 nights.  Even as I travel I will keep Holy Family parish in my prayers.  I will remember Holydays day camp in a special way.  I will be back on Wednesday evening - July 20th.

Knights of Columbus Awards

On the evening of Saturday July 9th, our Knights of Columbus Council #10614 hosted their annual Knights BBQ.  It was a delicious steak and chicken dinner with Baked Potato and Caesar Salad! MMMM!    At the dinner a number of the Knights were recognized for their service.

Dennis Busca was honoured as Knight of the year.  Dennis has been very involved in the Squires program, the Santa Parade Float,  and has also been the person who cuts the beef for the steaks for the annual BBQ!!!  Congrats Dennis!

This year our council has been helping in the formation of a new council in St. John's Caledon East.  That process begins with the establishment of a "round table".  Pat McFarland and his wife May were honoured as Family of the year for their strong commitment to the new round table in Caledon East.

Finally Bert Markovic was recognized for his years of service on the executive of the Knights - as Treasurer.  Bert served 16 years as treasurer (1996-2011) and is the longest serving executive officer in the same position in the council's history!  Thank you Bert for your dedication (and to your wife Nancy who really helped!)

Peace.

Refugee Family Update - July 9

Saturday Greetings!  This afternoon our Refugee Committee met again to look at housing / and the process of bringing the Family to Bolton.  The lease has been partially signed - and will be completed on Tuesday Morning at COSTI.  The same day our refugee family will meet their Canadian Immigration worker, and receive their first check from the Canadian Government.  (Since the family is a JAS case - they are being partially supported by the Canadian Government.)
The Lease will take place starting July 15 - so we hope to have them come up on Wednesday and stay with our Committee members to get some of the items - and to shop for some basic needs.  We also hope to get the utilities hooked up this week.

As far as Furniture - here is what they get from the Government of Canada Allowance - it is a Package deal!

5 single beds / 5 metal frames; 2 double dressers (each with mirror); 4 table lamps & 2 floor lamps; 3 seater sofa & 2 armchairs; & a 7 piece Kitchen set
We are in need of 2 items:
1 or 2 Dehumidifier(s)
1 or 2 Bundle Buggies
(Picture on left)

The bundle Buggy allows them to bring their groceries / shopping home.  They will not have a car for a while, and will be walking everywhere in town.  Thankfully the house that they are renting is centrally located and close to Schools, shops, and the Language instruction at CCS.

Peace

Why have Holydays???

It was an innocent enough question. At the Finance Council Meeting Wednesday evening one of the members asked: "So why are we doing this Holydays Summer Day Camp?"
We were looking at the the numbers of registrants (60-70 campers each week), reviewing the budget (balanced), and discussing the feedback from parents (very positive). I said something like - well summer is supposed to be lighter and easier - but it sure isn't for us this year.  So then the question was asked "So why are we doing this Holydays Summer Day Camp?"
I wonder if you might also ask this question - and so I offer readers of the blog three main reasons:

  1. Serving the grade 1 - grade 6 age group.  When our staff was reviewing the pastoral care offered in the parish - and particularly looking at youth programs and services - in our view this age group was under served. Other than the involvement in preparation for sharing in the Eucharist for the first time, and first Reconciliation, we wanted to provide faith and fun activities for this age group.
  2. Leadership opportunities for our Teens. Part of a goal in offering any youth ministry is to find opportunities to cultivate leadership skills and mentor out older teens in Catholic Leadership qualities.  This camp allows us to employ these teens in a positive Catholic environment, and mentor them in relational ministry.  Relational Ministry means that the person is the goal of any interaction, not simply the program or the game or the activity.  It means getting to know the campers and witnessing to them how we are called to live the good news.
  3. Evangelization. Pope John Paul II called for a new evangelization of the christian world.  A summer day camp such as Holydays offers our parish an opportunity to put the Gospel Message into practice. Even our final slide show and awards ceremony was rooted in the Catholic Faith, with awards given to different campers based on attributes of the saints:

  • St. Andrew award: for courage to try new things
  • St. Theresa award: for cheerfulness and kind nature
  • St. Aloysius Gonzaga award: for demonstrating faith
  • St. Martha award: for helping fellow campers
  • Holy Family Award: Hard working, following God's path
Each morning I was with the campers for the
opening prayer and reflection. On Thursday morning (the day after the Finance Council Meeting) I noticed one of the campers: the way he was throwing himself into the prayer and singing the song with "gusto".  I turned to Stephanie - our camp Director - and she turned to me and at the same time we both said to each other - THIS is why we do this!
